This just came over the wire today: GS1 US™ announced today that 55 foodservice manufacturers, distributors and operators have launched the Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative, and have  funded the GS1 US Team for Foodservice to guide execution. The Initiative recommends the adoption of a common timeline for voluntary individual company implementation of GS1 Global standards for company identification, item identification and product description….

All 55 foodservice industry backers are listed in the news release which you can see here. There’s too many big names to single out a few. And, I think it this a bigidea that’s long overdue and will, as many of the people quoted in the release are saying,  make life a lot better for restaurants and people who go out to dine. By the way, it is going to take a while for this initiative to attain its goal of 75% adoption of GS1 standards in the foodservice industry. They are targeting 2015.
