Remember that Bill Clinton saying, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Well, a news item on this government site in Hong Kong doesn’t specifically use that expression, but it is exactly how you might characterize the obsession with GS1 in the region. Speaking at a forum that was co-organized by GS1 Hong Kong, Commissioner for Innovation & Technology Eddy Chan said, “Our Innovation & Technology Fund has supported 22 RFID projects from 2004 to 2008, with a total amount of $150 million…”  But that’s not all.  The report adds: The Hong Kong R&D Centre for Logistics & Supply Chain Management Enabling Technologies has kick-started and managed more than 20 research projects, amounting to more than $100 million, to facilitate core RFID technology developments.

The GS1 Hong Kong co-sponsored forum, by the way, was held to share with the industry the know-how and value of deploying RFID and Electronic Product Code, or EPC, technology for transport and logistics businesses.
