This just in yesterday and if any of the medical devices you manufacturer and ship globally are a one-of-kind product offering, this will interest you. Courtesy of Industrial Distribution magazine, we’re told:

The Industrial Supply Assn.’s numbering system for tracking made-to-order products, Custom Industrial Supply Number (CISN), was approved by GS1, the international organization that sets supply chain standards… The CISN system assigns unique numbers to custom products.

Turns out, according to this news item, about 40% of all products sold in the industrial supply chain are custom products. But maybe there’s an even bigger message for us all in this news. If GS1 is working this hard and going to this length to establish an international standard, including a solution that doesn’t affect 60% of all industrial products, doesn’t that imply they are doing all the things upon which a true international standard can be built. So even if you don’t make custom products, this news might give you confidence that the standards body behind GS1 is covering all the bases and doing all the right things, big and small.
